About Mark Snyder
Mark Snyder, licensed California Contractor, organic farmer, inventor, community activist, and long time San Diego resident, is on a mission. Mark believes that it is time to change the way people regard alternative energy. And he seems to be doing just that. Mark says,
"Nearly everyone admits that alternative energy has always been a good idea". But now, he adds,
"In this age of foreign dependency, oil shocks, and electric power deregulation, people all over the world are finding that alternative power is more than just a good idea. Its become a necessity."
No doubt. In the past people were reluctant to turn to renewable energy sources, like solar power, even though they are known to be clean and abundant. Snyder feels that one of the major reasons our nation hasn't already become energy self- reliant is because of the misconception that solar power isn't price competitive. Snyder says think again,
"When a solar power system is mounted on your home's rooftop, not only do you get electricity at a competitive price, but you also avoid the distribution and transmission charges that now represent more than half of your monthly electric bill."
Its true. Because of federal laws known as "net metering", energy produced off the grid, say on your own property, is not subject to the normal "handling" costs charged to customers for transporting the electricity across a utility companies power cabling networks.
This figure below shows that because of handling charges billed by your utility company, Rooftop PV Solar is at the price parity level when energy is purchased on the grid at the California cap rate of 6.5 cents per kWh.
*subsidy included at $3 per watt, 4 kW system, $28,000 pre-subsidy installation cost, .93 inversion factor data used for conventional power is extrapolated from prices shown for energy, transmission, and distribution by SDG&E at: http://www.sdge.com/Email/sampbill3.html
Although the future price of conventional electricity is subject to inflation, political uncertainty, market fluctuations, as well as the cost and availability of fossil fuels, the cost of Solar PV is fixed for the useful lifetime of the system. And there are other good reasons for investing in a solar power system for your home. Snyder says,
"Everybody who invests does so for their own reasons; to save for retirement, to shelter money from taxes, to derive current income, and so forth. But the experts have always told me that the first rule of successful financial planning is to know your investment objectives."
And if your objective is to find for a safe way to watch your savings grow, Snyder has just the right answer. Check out this idea:
Imagine learning that you could add significantly to your home's value, enjoy a more secure lifestyle, and that you could recover the benefit in terms of appreciation when you sell your home or if you choose ever to take out a home equity loan.
Not bad. But what if you also learned that the improvement could instantly be worth twice what you pay for it and that it would produce a virtual income stream that would pay for itself during its useful lifetime? Snyder point out,
"With the California solar buy down program, residential customers can receive a rebate up to about 50% against the cost of all qualifying parts and labor incurred during the purchase and installation of your home system."
And if the cost of electricity and the underlying price of fossil fuels continues to outpace inflation, your home power investment provides you with an excellent hedge. But what if you want to use your solar power system to payoff those nagging electric bills? Snyder says your home solar power investment provides you with a current income benefit for that too. He says,
"Because of net metering, a home solar power system will literally cause your electric meter to spin backwards!"
Want another reason? All improvements made under the program are exempt from property taxation! Snyder adds,
"Owning a well designed home power system means you really do own your own power. Those who don't just rent their power and when all is said and done, after they turn the lights out, all they have left to show is another unpaid electric bill."
And Snyder can help you with ideas about wind power, micro hydro, energy efficiency and even bio mass. Oh yeah! Want to cut your energy bill by 20% with no out of pocket cost what so ever? Just ask Mark.
